Medications to avoid with lap band

The Lap-Band is a safe surgical procedure to assist in weight loss. However, lap-band patients are urged to follow certain precautions in order to maximize their chances at a successful, problem-free recovery.

There are some medications that should be avoided if you have had the Lap-Band procedure. Chief among these are anti-inflammatory drugs. Aspirin, ibuprofen (Advil), naproxen sodium (Aleve), and other drugs of this type should be used with caution and only after checking with a doctor. This is because they may contribute to a higher risk of the band eroding into the stomach.

Other than that, patients on medication related to certain conditions may not be good candidates for the Lap-Band. This is not because the medication makes it unsafe, but because these conditions make it more likely that there will be complications with the Lap-Band.

These conditions include:

  • Alcohol and drug addiction
  • Gastrointestinal conditions
  • Autoimmune disease, or family history of autoimmune disease
  • Cardiopulmonary or inflammatory diseases
  • Pregnancy (Those who are currently pregnant may not undergo surgery. However, patients may become pregnant after they have healed from their surgery. Consult your bariatric surgeon for details.)

As always, follow your doctor’s advice.
