The Lap-Band is a safe surgical procedure to assist in weight loss. However, lap-band patients are urged to follow certain precautions in order to maximize their chances at a successful, problem-free recovery.
There are some medications that should be avoided if you have had the Lap-Band procedure. Chief among these are anti-inflammatory drugs. Aspirin, ibuprofen (Advil), naproxen sodium (Aleve), and other drugs of this type should be used with caution and only after checking with a doctor. This is because they may contribute to a higher risk of the band eroding into the stomach.
Other than that, patients on medication related to certain conditions may not be good candidates for the Lap-Band. This is not because the medication makes it unsafe, but because these conditions make it more likely that there will be complications with the Lap-Band.
These conditions include:
- Alcohol and drug addiction
- Gastrointestinal conditions
- Autoimmune disease, or family history of autoimmune disease
- Cardiopulmonary or inflammatory diseases
- Pregnancy (Those who are currently pregnant may not undergo surgery. However, patients may become pregnant after they have healed from their surgery. Consult your bariatric surgeon for details.)
