At our Marina Del Rey Hospital offices, LA Bariatrics sees patients from a wide variety of age groups and backgrounds, and as a Center of Excellence for Bariatric Surgery, we see patients from throughout Southern California. We have occasionally treated teenaged patients, although these cases need to be assessed with special care. Most often, we perform laparoscopic adjustable gastric band surgery — also known as the lap-band —on Los Angeles residents between 18 and 65.
Aging often goes along with health complications, and health complications can make a patient less likely to tolerate surgery. In the evaluation process, our surgeon and support staff ensure that each of our patients is physically and mentally ready for surgery, including all the physical stress and emotional effects it can have. In addition, morbid obesity itself is a stressor on the body, and the effects can accumulate if the patient has been obese for a very long time. Those over 65 may be at an even higher risk for conditions that may complicate surgery, and surgery is generally indicated for people below that age.
